Ukraine Tests Over 70 Ground Drones in Largest Trial Yet

by Belinda

Ukraine has just completed its largest-ever test of unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), putting more than 70 ground drones through tough battlefield conditions. The trial was organized by the Brave1 defense technology cluster and involved 50 different domestic manufacturers.

The UGVs were tested on a 10-kilometer course with difficult terrain, unknown routes, and the presence of electronic warfare using constantly changing frequencies. The goal was to evaluate how well the machines could perform under real combat-like conditions.

Most of the ground drones proved they could carry heavy loads and maintain strong performance over long distances. These tests measured both technical reliability and how ready the machines are for actual battlefield use.

Unlike flying drones, UGVs can carry much larger payloads—such as ammunition, supplies, or explosives—making them ideal for complex military tasks. They can be used for missions like reconnaissance, precision attacks, mine deployment or removal, and fixed defense roles.

Brave1 said that the tests focused on mobility and advanced communication systems, both of which are essential for long-range missions in difficult environments. “These trials tested exactly those capabilities,” the organization confirmed.

Engineers and members of Ukraine’s Security and Defence Forces also joined the trial to support the integration of these drones into real operations. Many of the drones tested are already in use by frontline units, including the 3rd, 5th, and 92nd Separate Assault Brigades. They are also deployed by the National Guard unit Khartiia, and elite forces like the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine and the Security Service’s special operations team “A”.

The next phase of development will focus on using ground drones for logistics and casualty evacuation. Brave1 also plans to create a concept for combat robots that balances mobility with firepower.
