A drone strike hit a residential building in Russia’s Kursk Oblast on April 14, killing one person and injuring nine others, according to Russian officials.
Authorities said the explosion caused a fire that engulfed the upper floors of the building in the city of Kursk. The flames spread to the 8th and 9th floors, officials claimed in a social media post.
Among the injured, nine people reportedly suffered from shrapnel wounds, burns, and head injuries. Emergency responders are on the scene, but the conditions of the injured have not been released.
The origin of the drone remains unclear. Ukrainian military officials have not commented on the incident, and there has been no confirmation from independent sources about the strike.
Kursk Oblast lies along the Russia-Ukraine border and frequently sees military action. Earlier this year, Ukraine reportedly advanced into the region, temporarily seizing around 1,300 square kilometers (500 square miles) before a Russian counteroffensive, which included support from North Korean units, pushed back.
While Ukraine has occasionally struck Russian territory, drone attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities are far more frequent. According to Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, since a March 11 truce with the United States, Russia has launched 70 missiles, over 2,200 Iranian-made Shahed drones, and 6,000 guided bombs at Ukraine.
