Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has claimed that Chinese citizens were working at a drone factory in Russia and suggested that Moscow may have acquired Chinese drone technology without Beijing’s knowledge.
Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy said Ukraine had shared this information with the Chinese government through official channels. He added that Ukraine’s Security Service was instructed to provide China with more detailed evidence about the individuals involved.
“We believe Russia may have stolen these technologies or made arrangements with the individuals without the approval of Chinese leadership,” Zelenskyy said.
The comments come days after Zelenskyy made his strongest accusation yet, saying China was supplying Russia with weapons and gunpowder—an allegation China has firmly denied. Beijing insists it remains neutral in the conflict and promotes peaceful solutions.
In recent weeks, Ukraine has made several claims involving China. Earlier this month, Zelenskyy said Russia was recruiting Chinese nationals through social media to fight in the war, and he believed Chinese officials were aware of this.
China responded by calling for all sides to avoid “irresponsible remarks,” in what appeared to be a rebuke of Zelenskyy’s statements. Chinese officials have reiterated their support for peace in Ukraine and denied providing any direct military assistance to Russia.
There has been no immediate response from Russia or China regarding Zelenskyy’s latest claims about the drone facility.
China and Russia signed a “no limits” strategic partnership just days before the Russian invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. Since then, both nations have maintained close diplomatic and economic ties, raising concerns in the West about China’s potential role in the ongoing conflict.
Zelenskyy’s allegations come at a sensitive time, as Ukraine seeks greater diplomatic and military support from Western allies amid renewed fighting and a complex global backdrop.
