Morocco Strengthens Military with Chinese-Made TB-001K Drones

by Belinda

Morocco has acquired Chinese-made TB-001K “Scorpion” reconnaissance and attack drones as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize its defense capabilities and deepen ties with Beijing.

Developed by Sichuan Tengden Sci-Tech Innovation Co., the TB-001K drone is designed with dual engines and a twin-tail structure, enhancing its maneuverability. The drone boasts a remarkable operational range of up to 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles) and can remain in the air for up to 35 hours. It is also capable of carrying up to 1,200 kilograms (2,646 pounds) of light missiles and bombs, making it versatile for a variety of combat operations.

Once delivered, these drones are expected to significantly bolster Morocco’s strike capabilities, particularly as the country faces increasing regional security challenges. However, the quantity, contract value, and delivery timeline for the drones have not been disclosed.

Expanding Morocco’s Drone Fleet

Morocco has already proven the effectiveness of its drone fleet in military operations across the Sahara, where it has successfully targeted and neutralized separatist Polisario Front forces, securing control over buffer zones. According to Drone Procurement Data, Morocco has the second-largest fleet of military UAVs in Africa, behind Egypt, with 223 drones in service as of 2023.

A Diverse Range of Defense Suppliers

Ranked 59th in military power by the Global Firepower Institute, Morocco has steadily strengthened its defense capabilities through purchases from various international suppliers, including China. The country has previously acquired several Chinese-made defense systems, such as the Sky Dragon 50 long-range air defense system, AR2 multiple rocket launchers, FD-2000B air defense missile system, and HJ-9A anti-tank missile systems.

In 2022, Morocco selected the Wing Loong II medium-altitude, long-endurance UAV for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, further complementing its expanding drone capabilities. These drones have been instrumental in monitoring Morocco’s southern border, especially in areas where separatist groups remain active.

Modernization Beyond Drones

Morocco’s military modernization efforts extend beyond UAVs. The country is in advanced discussions with Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation (HAIC) to potentially acquire L-15 Falcon fighter jets, aimed at replacing its aging fleet of Franco-German Alpha jets. Additionally, the Royal Moroccan Navy has strengthened its defense with the purchase of the Chinese HJ-9A anti-tank missile system.

Despite its growing defense relationship with China, Morocco continues to diversify its defense suppliers. The country recently received Bayraktar Akinci drones from Turkey as part of a 2023 deal, following the acquisition of Bayraktar TB2 drones in January. In 2022, Morocco also procured 150 vertical takeoff and landing drones from Israel in a deal valued at “tens of millions of dollars.”

In 2020, the U.S. approved the sale of four MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones to Morocco, further diversifying the country’s defense partnerships.

Conclusion

Morocco’s acquisition of the Chinese-made TB-001K drones underscores the country’s strategic approach to military modernization. By diversifying its defense suppliers and strengthening ties with both Eastern and Western powers, Morocco is positioning itself as a more formidable force in the region. As regional security challenges intensify, these advanced UAVs, along with other modern defense systems, are expected to enhance Morocco’s ability to secure its borders and project power, ensuring that it remains a key player in North Africa’s evolving security landscape.
