BYD and DJI Launch Car-Mounted Drone for Real-Time Action Shots

by Belinda

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD has partnered with drone maker DJI to introduce a groundbreaking innovation: a drone that can launch from the roof of your car while it’s driving. This futuristic technology is now available in mainland China for 16,000 yuan (approximately $2,200 USD).

The process is simple—just press a button on the car’s large touchscreen, and two panels on the roof slide open, revealing a platform where the drone can launch. The system is designed to work while the car is in motion, though it is likely intended for slower speeds to ensure safety and proper functionality. This collaboration aims to transform vehicles into dynamic platforms for entertainment and exploration, allowing users to capture unique travel moments in real-time from a vertical field of view.

Once airborne, the DJI drone can follow the car, capturing action shots as the vehicle moves along the road. It’s designed for use in remote areas, away from the potential hazards of cities, buildings, power lines, or crowded areas. The drone can track the car at speeds up to 54 km/h (about 33.5 mph) and has an automatic return feature, allowing it to come back from a distance of up to 2 kilometers (about 1.24 miles).

When the drone completes its mission, it can automatically return to the car and recharge on the launch platform, ensuring it’s ready for the next adventure. The combination of car-mounted drone technology offers a new dimension to capturing scenic drives, creating real-time aerial footage that adds to the excitement of road trips and outdoor explorations.
