BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has introduced an innovative on-vehicle drone system to boost sales in China’s competitive $1.48 trillion auto market. The Shenzhen-based company partnered with DJI to launch the “Lingyuan” drone system, adding smart features to its EV lineup.
The system includes a roof-mounted docking station that allows the drone to take off, charge, and track the vehicle’s movements. Priced at 16,000 yuan (US$2,195), the system is currently available in mainland China and comes with a drone, docking station, onboard module, and apps for AI recognition and film editing.
BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu emphasized the deep integration of cars and drones, stating the system was designed and developed from the ground up. This collaboration aims to offer a fully integrated solution, setting BYD apart in a market where traditional automakers face fierce competition from new entrants like Xiaomi and Huawei.
In addition to the drone system, BYD recently launched its “God’s Eye” autonomous driving technology at no cost for 21 of its models. The new drone system will be available for models such as the Yangwang U8 and the Denza N9, with some versions of the Bao 8 SUV pre-equipped with Lingyuan.
The partnership between BYD and DJI is expected to popularize vehicle-mounted drone technology beyond niche enthusiasts, according to DJI President Luo Zhenhua.
BYD’s rapid global expansion and introduction of innovative features have led JPMorgan Chase to raise its price target for the company by over 60%, forecasting 6.5 million global vehicle sales by 2026.
