Ukraine Launches Drone Strikes Deep Inside Russia as Tensions Escalate

Ukrainian drones attacked the Russian city of Dzerzhinsk in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast overnight on April 29, according to regional Governor Gleb Nikitin.

Nikitin said the attack was intercepted by air defenses over two districts in the area. He reported no damage or injuries.

Russian Telegram channel Shot, which is reportedly linked to security forces, said explosions were also heard in Ryazan. It claimed that drones may have been targeting an oil refinery in the region.

Russia’s Defense Ministry stated that its forces shot down 91 Ukrainian drones overnight. This included eight drones over Nizhny Novgorod Oblast and 11 over Ryazan Oblast. Additional drones were intercepted over the regions of Kursk, Oryol, Moscow, Belgorod, Kaluga, and Bryansk, as well as over occupied Crimea.

Ukrainian officials have not commented on the strikes, and the claims could not be independently verified.

Dzerzhinsk is located about 800 kilometers (500 miles) from the Russia-Ukraine border. Ryazan lies roughly 500 kilometers (310 miles) away. Ukrainian forces have repeatedly targeted Russian military and industrial sites deep inside Russian territory in an effort to weaken Moscow’s war capabilities.

At the same time, Russia continues its frequent attacks on Ukrainian cities and villages using drones, missiles, glide bombs, and artillery. These attacks often result in civilian casualties.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that it shot down 37 of 100 attack and decoy drones launched by Russia during the same night. The military said another 47 decoy drones vanished from radar without causing any damage.
