Brussels Police to Deploy ‘Drone-in-a-Box’ Systems for Emergency Response

by Belinda

The Brussels Capital-Ixelles local police zone has officially received approval to deploy three drone-in-a-box systems for police operations. This move marks a major step forward in using technology to improve public safety.

The unmanned drones will be used to quickly map the situation at an incident before patrols arrive. With real-time information from the drones, emergency services can better estimate the resources and personnel needed.

The drones and pilots are provided by Citymesh, a company with extensive experience in drone operations. This year alone, Citymesh has conducted over 600 Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) flights for the Fire Department. The drones have proven to be valuable as “extra eyes in the sky” for emergency services.

SkeyDrone will act as the drone traffic controller for the operations. It will ensure the safe execution of all flights using its own specialized traffic management software and traffic information services.

Skeyes, the national air navigation service provider and manager of Belgian airspace, plays a central role in the project. For years, skeyes has invested in the drone sector, supporting applications that are both economically and socially useful.

In preparation for the future implementation of the U-space airspace model, skeyes acts as a facilitator for public organizations like the police and emergency services.

Through this collaboration, skeyes strengthens its leadership in integrating drones into national airspace and confirms its commitment to supporting public services with innovative solutions.
