The World Council of Churches (WCC) general secretary, Rev. Prof. Dr. Jerry Pillay, has expressed deep sorrow and concern over the loss of civilian lives in a recent drone strike in Ethiopia’s Amhara region.
The attack, which took place on 23 April in the town of Gedeb, killed more than 100 civilians, including women and children. Victims were gathered at a primary school for community activities when the strike occurred.
“This atrocity adds to a growing list of similar incidents in recent months, including another devastating drone strike earlier in 2024 that also targeted civilians,” Pillay said.
He strongly condemned attacks on civilian-populated areas, stating, “The World Council of Churches condemns in the strongest possible terms such attacks.”
Pillay also raised concerns about the rising use of autonomous or semi-autonomous armed drones in conflict zones. He warned that these weapons are often used without proper respect for international humanitarian law or sufficient safeguards to protect civilians.
“The situation raises deep moral and ethical questions,” he added. “We call on all parties involved in the ongoing conflicts in Ethiopia to respect international humanitarian law, refrain from attacks on civilians, and commit to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.”
Pillay urged both national and international stakeholders to pursue inclusive dialogue and peaceful resolutions, calling these the only sustainable paths to justice and peace.
He also called on churches and religious communities in Ethiopia to serve as voices for justice, reconciliation, peace, and unity.
“The World Council of Churches stands in solidarity with the victims and their families and extends heartfelt condolences to all who are grieving,” Pillay said.
