Romania to Begin Military Drone Production with U.S. Partner by 2025

Romanian defense company Carfil, in partnership with U.S.-based Periscope Aviation, will begin producing military drones in Brașov by the end of 2025. The announcement was made by Romania’s economy minister, Bogdan Ivan, during the visit of a U.S. Congressional delegation to Bucharest.

Minister Ivan confirmed that two types of drones are set for production, although he did not provide specific details. “Drone production will begin in May and will reach serial capacity by the end of the year,” he said.

The drones will be designed for both export and domestic use, as part of the government’s broader defense strategy. This development follows the signing of a memorandum in November 2024 for the “Romanian Drone” project.

Currently, Romania’s largest military drone is a multicopter that can transport wounded soldiers and deliver ammunition. This advanced unmanned aircraft weighs about 300 kilograms and costs several hundred thousand euros.
